About YunnanBaiyao

SustainabilityManagement

Amid the vigorous development of the TCM industry, the significance of theTCM seed industry as the foundation of the industry is becoming increasinglyprominent. Yunnan Baiyao resolutely implements the new objectives andrequirements for the high-quality development of the TCM industry put forwardby the Sixth Plenary Session of the Eleventh Yunnan Provincial Committee ofthe Communist Party of China, focusing on the five objectives of “developingthe seed industry from a high starting point, advancing cultivation with highstandards, enhancing processing with high energy levels, expanding the marketat a high level, and building the brand with a high stance.” With profoundindustry expertise and forward-looking strategic vision, Yunnan Baiyao placesgreat emphasis on the TCM seed industry and makes every e?ort to create a “SeedChip,” invigorates the construction of the full-chain ecosystem of TCM industryand drives high-quality development of the industry to new heights.

Yunnan, known as the “Kingdom of Plants,” is rich in TCM material resources and hostsa diverse array of TCM ingredients, holding a signicant position in the country. However, for a long time, the TCM seed industry in Yunnan has faced many challenges: unevenprovenance quality, self-cultivation and self-collection of farmers, scattered transactionsand a lack of quality testing, which make it di?cult to guarantee the quality of planting andseriously restrict industrial upgrading. In this context, Yunnan Baiyao bravely participatesin the construction of the TCM seed industry, striving to break through developmentbottlenecks.

To enhance the technological level of the seed industry, Yunnan Baiyao continues toincrease investment in scientic research. It established Yunnan Baiyao Group Seed IndustryTechnology Co., Ltd., and built an integrated modern seed innovation system of “breeding, propagation, and promotion.” We cooperated with Higentec to carry out Panax notoginsengmolecular selection, and achieved rapid directional breeding with modern biotechnology. We introduced advanced breeding technologies and equipment from home and abroad, established an experimental R&D center at the headquarters, and equipped it with seedproduction workshops to promote the transformation of TCM breeding from reliance ontraditional experience to a model based on scientific precision. We also established atesting platform for TCM seeds and seedlings to comprehensively verify and assess theirauthenticity and quality, providing assurance for high-standard planting in the seed industry.

In terms of variety breeding, Yunnan Baiyaohas achieved fruitful results. Six superiorvarieties of Paris polyphylla were bred, andthe cultivated Paris polyphylla seedlings areexcellent in quality and strong adaptability, which effectively improved the planting yieldand quality. We have also made importantprogress in selection and breeding ofFritillaria cirrhosa, Yunnan Angelica sinensis,Dolomiaea costus and other varieties, andestablished harvesting bases and nurserybases for a number of superior varieties, toprovide a high-quality provenance guaranteefor industrial development.

Yunnan Baiyao attaches great importance to the protection and development of germplasmresources of TCM materials. After years of efforts, we have successfully overcome theproblem of Yunnan Paris polyphylla from wild to articial large-scale planting, collected 23Paris polyphylla varieties across China, and established the world’s largest Paris polyphyllaliving germplasm resource nursery, laying a solid foundation for the protection of raregermplasm resources and the sustainable development of the Paris polyphylla industry. At the same time, we have completed the cultivation of several high-quality varieties suchas Dolomiaea costus, Aconitum vilmorinianum and Fritillaria cirrhosa, built a germplasmresource nursery that preserves 105 kinds of authentic medicinal materials in northwestYunnan, conducted the breeding research of multiple varieties, continuously enriched thegermplasm resource reserve, and provided abundant “chip” materials for the development ofthe seed industry.

Yunnan Baiyao explores innovative operating models, takes varieties as the core, builds amodel of “one variety + one expert team + one variety manager + 3 to 5 partners,” integratesscientific research resources, to form a base cluster for seed collection, seedling, anddemonstration planting. We cooperated with Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences,Southwest Forestry University, and other scientic research institutions to jointly carry outbreed selection and technical research, accelerate the transformation and application ofscientic research results, and enhance the collaborative innovation capacity of the industry.

The development of seed industry is not only related to the enterprise itself, but also closelyrelated to the interests of planting enterprises and farmers. Yunnan Baiyao focuses onserving the GAP system across the Yunnan province and self-built planting bases, promotesthe selection and breeding of seedlings, and integrates the entire process of “seedling-planting-harvesting” into the digital planting system to achieve full traceability and closed-loop production management.
